Āhimsa: Inquiry into Veganism

Āhimsa (non-violence) is literally the foundation of yoga practice. It shows up as the first Yama in Patañjali’s Ashtanga system. When in doubt, the yogi is directed to lead with āhimsa. So what exactly is āhimsa and how is one meant to practice it in a tangible and modern way? How does the practice of āhimsa effect our physical, psycho-emotional and mental well-being? How do we re-contextualize this vital yoga teaching so that it is relevant, palpable and actually useful in our lives? We will be exploring and unpacking these questions, among others that will naturally arise in our cohort. This course will connect the roots of yoga practice to the contemporary ethical stance of veganism. While there will be some practical discussion, the focus of the course will be philosophical.
